Atlantic County Divorce Records
Divorce cases are heard in the Family Division of the Atlantic County Superior Court. These records comprise initial filings, case information, division of assets and property, child custody where applicable, and the final judgments (divorce decrees).
Only case parties and attorneys of record can access divorce documents. The clerk’s office requires requesters to provide valid state IDs during the request process. Ineligible requesters must submit a court order to access divorce files.
When cases are active, eligible parties can contact the family division in Atlantic County to obtain their divorce records. However, inquirers must approach the state’s Superior Court Clerk for documents related to closed cases. The local court can clarify whether a closed case has been moved to the state clerk’s facility in Trenton.
While the full certified copy of the divorce decree is required for various legal purposes, the clerk can prepare a Certificate of Divorce instead, which serves the same purpose. The document is stamped with the seal of the Superior Court and contains the docket number, names of case parties, county of venue, and date of the final divorce judgment.
